Horror Flick of the Week: Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010)

In light of this year's tragedy (which only serves to make me even more aware that eventually John Carpenter's going to kick the bucket too), I decided to recommend something I've not only got on this month's watch list for you guys, but probably one of the best horror film documentaries I've ever seen. Painstakingly created by people who clearly loved the NOES series, which excellent stop motion interludes between sequences...this is a documentary I could easily say might become part of my personal yearly Halloween watch list.

If you like Robert Englund. If you like Wes Craven. If you like NOES or Freddy. If you like horror documentaries. If you like any and/or all of the above, I urge you to watch this as soon as you can. It's just that good.

Halloween Hotties: Vintage Pinups 2015

It's time once more for another article featuring some excellent pin-ups of classic actresses from what is gradually becoming 'days of yore'. It's astonishing how beautiful some of these photos are, and I'm glad to once more bring some of them to light for the Halloween season. For those questioning Mary Pickford's presence, I can honestly say I just think she was beautiful no matter what she wore, and even if it wasn't scanty...it was still a Halloween picture.

Yum Yum, Pumpkin! 10 Pumpkin Recipes for Halloween

Now that October is finally picking up, I've got a hankering for some tasty treats. But I just don't have the time to set up my camera and document the process. LUCKILY, there are some incredible online chefs out there with AWESOME party food ideas. So without further ado, my top 10 favorite pumpkin recipes for the Halloween season. Because pumpkin is so hot right now. Unfortunately, pumpkin pie will not be listed...because that's strictly a Thanksgiving treat in my world.

I would also like to add that these people are very talented, and many of them feature even more great recipes worth checking out. So if you like what I've featured, please feel free to check out (and even subscribe) to their channels to support them :)

Vintage Comics - Adventures Into Darkness, Issue 6: Corpse Convention, The Thing From the Sea (Pg 11 - Pg. 22)

Right on time for the new 'Hotel Transylvania 2', we've got a story in Adventures into Darkness featuring a creepy hotel. Complete coincidence, figured it was worth mentioning anyway. As someone who actually worked in hotel, I can honestly say I would avoid the kind that had so many guests milling about the lobby at such an ungodly hour...but I guess that would defeat the purpose of the story, wouldn't it?

Pumpkin Patterns (Somewhat Advanced)

So, this year I decided to make something of my own. Sort of. I always see so many cool pumpkin carvings around Halloween, I thought perhaps I'd post a few kiddy pictures again to guide you on how to shape the perfect triangular bat or even a creepy pumpkin within a pumpkin...but then I remembered I've got Photoshop, and heck...plenty of adults like to carve too! These patterns are modified stills from various films, many of them featuring my favorite horror greats. For those of you who may have no idea how to proceed with your carving based off of these pictures, I tried my best to make them as simple as possible. The darker, the less you carve. So when you put a candle inside, the white parts should be better illuminated, making a great depth and shadow effect.

If your pumpkin turns out successfully spooky, please post pictures in the comments or send me an email. Heck, even if it doesn't, I'd love to see what you guys come up with!

Book(s) of the Week: Kwaidan - Stories and Studies of Strange Things

By Lafcadio Hearn

I have always found myself fascinated with a good short story. Especially the kind verging on folktale. They are so tied to the culture they originate from, one can almost believe a folktale has some tie to real historic events. 'Kwaidan' (very...very roughly) translates to 'Weird Tales', but often we interpret them as horror stories alone. Possibly due to Lafcadio Hearn, who was so influential in bringing a slice of literary knowledge to the Western world in regards to Japan.

When Japan was becoming less isolated from the rest of the world, many westerners seemed to mock them for their seemingly backwards behaviors and views, and Kaidan/Kwaidan, a tradition of story-telling originating in the Edo period was practically outlawed in the process to make Japan look more developed. Many stories Lafcadio Hearn documented might have been lost forever, if he hadn't taken pen to paper. My point being that this book not only contains excellent stories, but bits of history in it as well. Very much worth reading for fans of classic as well as modern horror literature.
